For the past 5 years Google has sponsored a summer of code where students work on various open source projects. This summer I'll be creating accessible administrator templates for Joomla's backend.
Joomla! 1.5 made great strides in accessibility in the frontend. It is important that Joomla! 1.6 does the same for the backend. The primary goal of my project is to bring the Administrator into compliance with accessibility standards. These templates could also be copied and modified to match the look and feel of customized frontends.
The actual coding starts on May 23, but I'm already getting into gear. There is a core of Joomla developers that I've joined who are in the midst of deciding on the principles to use for creating semantic and accessible layouts for the frontend. Those principles will be used as a basis for the backend as well.
So now is the time to finish off projects, make sure my development laptop is set and brush up on some coding. There have been forms to fill out, bios to write and about 527 google groups, forums, and skype groups to join in the last few days. We won't talk about the group that's had a 1000 posts in 2 days...we were warned about that one.
There are 1000 of us working on different open source projects across the world. I found at least one other person here in Western Massachusetts and four from Michigan State where I did my undergraduate work.
